Summer drinks

In the heat of the summer especially when we are on vacation we tend to grab a cold alcoholic beverage like beer,  cider, a glass of white wine or a gin and tonic. But since like increases like (an alcoholic beverage will vitiate your Pitta dosha) and opposite heals (Ayurveda recommends “cooling” drinks)

By cooling we don’t mean cold, but energetically cooling. There are some fruits, vegetables and herbs that have a cooling energy (virya). My favourite is aloe vera juice.

Aloe vera juice  has many health benefits

  •  helps the immune system
  • eases stomach ache and acid
  • reduces acidity in the body
  • soothes redness and swelling
  • encourages normal stomach lining

Add a tablespoon of aloe juice into a glass of water 1-2x/day

Cilantro juice is a popular herb around the globe. Some of the benefits are:

  • lowers anxiety and immproves sleep
  • lowers blood sugar levels
  • prevents urinary tract infections
  • settles digestive upset
  • protects against colon cancer

To make juice: place a handful of washed and chopped cilantro into a blender with about 1/2 cup of water and blend. Strain and drink.

Limes have similar qualities to lemons, however limes are not as aggravating to Pitta energies as lemon. Benefits are:

  • stimulates the peristaltic motion
  • helps with weight loss
  • the roughage in lime is helpful in easing constipation
  • an interesting fact that lime can help counter the effect of alcohol. Lime/lemon juice is added to so many coctails and even used as a wedge with some beer

Cucumber juice is a healthy, nutritious and versatile drink. Benefits:

  • rehydrates the body
  • fight cancers
  • aids weight loss and digestion

You can add a couple of slices in your water or drink it as a juice

Watermelon juice – deliciously refreshing and packed with vitamins and minerals. Benefits:

  • cleansing
  • alkalizing, mineralizing
  • diuretic
  • effective in promoting intestinal elimination and keeping the body free from toxic wastes

Peppermint – the theraputic effects have been known since ancient times. Benefits:

  • helps alleviate Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • colonic spasms and gas

You can add it to your water or any of your drinks

Pomegranate juice – contains high levels of antioxidants. Benefits:

  • reduces risk of heart disease
  • full of Vitamin C
  • helps prevent against cancer
  • protects against Alzheimer’s disease
  • anti-inflammatory

Best to drink it as a juice

My favourite drink for the summer:

Take a lemon and a cucumber and cut it into thin slices. Squeeze the juice of three lemons and add it to 2 litres of water. Add the slices of lemon, cucumber and some mint leaves. Add some honey. Chill it in your fridge and enjoy it!!

Next week I will share with you my favourite cooling herbal tea mix

Stay hydrated and in case  you are not already following my blog please do so

namaste, Valeria
