PITTA – hot, hot, hot


Summer  is Pitta season.  Pitta elements are Fire (hot) and Water (humid). As the sun warms up the air, the fire element does the same with our body.  Being Pitta and living in Spain, I know first hand how Pitta vitiated one can get, since like increases like – hot increases heat.  Whether you have a lot of Pitta in your constitution or not you need to pacify (cool) Pitta during the summer months.

Though Pitta is aggravated in summer, Pitta vitiation can occur at any time of the year. Here are the signs that Pitta is increased in the body:

  • skin irritation (red, inflamed rash, cold sores, acne)
  • burning sensation
  • acid indigestion
  • diarrhea
  • excessive sweating (can be very stinky)
  • hypertension
  • fever
  • inflammation
  • blurred vision
  • light sensitive eyes

The symptoms in the mind are:

  • anger
  • aggression
  • irritability
  • impatience
  • criticism
  • intolerance
  • excessive perfectionist tendencies

The dietary, lifestyle and herbal treatments you can do to decrease Pitta.


  • favor sweet, bitter, and astringent foods

Sweet taste does not mean dessert or soft dreanks. It is honey, rice, oat, quinoa, bread, sweet fruits

Bitter taste is dark, leafy greens, aloe vera, lime

Astringent taste is pomegranate, cilantro, cranberries, green beans, bean sprouts, mung daal

  • use cooling spices/herbs like fennel, coriander, mint, cardamom, saffron,  rose, dandelion, neem
  • avoid spicy, pungent, sour, salty, oily, processed and pungent foods
  • avoid drinking caffeine and alcohol
  • reduce sour fruits like grapefruits, apricots and berries
  • reduce vegetables like tomatoes, hot peppers, beets, eggplant, onions, garlic, and radishes
  • use hotter spices sparingly like ginger, cumin, black pepper, fenugreek, clove, salt
  • if you eat meat be mindful that red meat and seafood increase Pitta

Knowing this, you can see how easy it is to get your Pitta out of control. All you need is to stay out in the sun for a couple of hours, then have one or two drinks with spicy salsa and tortilla chips. For main course some salmon and to top it off for dessert a little bit of strawberries. I know, it sounds somewhat healthy but very Pitta vitiating.

Essential oils that pacify Pitta are Jasmine, Rose, Sandalwood, Frankisence, Lavender, and Mint. I recommend rose water spritz to spray the fine mist on your face,

Pranayama: (cooling)

  • Chandra -Bhedana, Left-Nostril (Lunar) Breathing
  • Sheetali

Exercise: moderate that includes yoga (yin and restorative),  biking, swimming and walking/hiking

Self-abhyanga: 10-20 minutes with coconut oil

Color therapy: since Pitta is hot, choose soft, pastel colors. Blues, greens, pinks and roses are the best

Instead of sun bathing choose moon bathing
